Cynthia Regina Martin

October 10, 1952 ~ August 11, 2023 (age 70) 70 Years Old

Obituary

Cynthia was born on October 10, 1952 in Carthage, North Carolina to the late John Nelson Martin and Marie McNeil Martin. She was called home on August 11, 2023 at her residence in Carthage, North Carolina.

Black history was important to Cynthia, and she played a foundational role in black history, as she was in one of the first classes to desegregate at Union Pines High School. She graduated and obtained her high school diploma in 1970. She then later went to complete airline school.

Cynthia had various jobs working for companies such as Avis Rental Car, Carolina Telephone, and Pinehurst Hotel and Country Club. Her most fulfilling job was working at American Airlines, where she had the opportunity to travel and learn about new places. After her time at American Airlines, she went to work as an auditor at The Pantry, where she was a faithful employee until she retired.

Besides black history and travel, Cynthia had many interests. She was an avid book reader, and always looked to expand her knowledge and vocabulary. She loved playing scrabble, and oftentimes on Sunday afternoon could be found with a handheld version of that game in her hand while watching the Dallas Cowboys. She was a lover of art, and fashion, and later in life she developed a deep appreciation for floral arrangements.

While she was a lady with a wide array of interests, her most important attribute was her faith in God. She became a Christian early in life, and became a member of Mount Zion, AME Zion church. She was a faithful dues paying member, and she served in various roles within the church. She served by reading the announcements and acknowledging visitors. Other roles she had included being the church historian, a member of the choir, a general claims clerk and she served on different committees including the steward and finance committee, and program committee.

She leaves to cherish her memories: one daughter, Sheteda de’Sanchez of Carthage, North Carolina, one granddaughter, Raven Boone (Austin), of Somerdale, New Jersey, one sister, Dixie Covington (James) of Charlotte, North Carolina, a host of aunts, uncles, cousins and friends, and a special friend: Roderick Smith of Carthage, North Carolina.

A funeral service will be held on Thursday, August 17th, 2023, 1:00 p.m. at Mt. Zion AME Church located at 584 Bryant Road, Carthage, NC 28327.  A public viewing will be held from 12:00 p.m.- 1:00 p.m. prior to the service.
